LEWISBURG, Pa. - Maneesha Chitanvis and Annmarie Irwin scored second-half goals to lift visiting Cornell to a 2-0 victory over Bucknell in non-league women's soccer action Sunday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Megan Bartlett made six saves for the Big Red, including two tough ones in the second half on Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) and Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) to preserve the shutout.
The run of play was fairly even throughout the game, but after a scoreless first half Cornell amped up the pressure early in the second. In a span of just two minutes, the Big Red had three near-misses. In the 50th minute Caedran Harvey found herself all alone in the box after a Bucknell clearing attempt ricocheted back off a Cornell player, but Harvey's low shot to the far post slipped wide. A minute later Brook Chang broke in behind the defense from the left side, but her near-post attempt was tipped wide by goalkeeper Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet). Moments later Chang weaved her way into the box but Garrehy made another nice save.
Cornell finally cashed in at the 57:17 mark when midfielder Abigail Apistolas lobbed a pass over the top of the Bucknell back line. Chitanvis caught up to the high bouncing ball, settled and ripped a shot past Garrehy for a 1-0 lead.
Bucknell nearly tied it with about 23 minutes to play when Dwornik burned a Cornell back and dribbled into open space inside the penalty area, but Bartlett made a nice lunging save.
Cornell tacked on an insurance goal in the 71st minute when Xandra Hompe sent a pass from the top of the 18 over to Irwin on the left flank. Irwin took a touch and scored on the short side to make it 2-0.
With 8:15 to play, Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./Shipley School) angled a perfect pass into Doherty, but she was robbed as Bartlett made a diving save to her left.
Cornell finished with a 15-13 shot advantage, while corner kicks were even at six apiece. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) and Garrehy split the goalkeeping duties for the Bison (1-8). McDermott made four saves in the first half, while Garrehy had three saves.
The Bison will look to snap their seven-game losing streak on Wednesday when Mount St. Mary's visits Emmitt Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
