LEWISBURG, Pa. - After dominating the first 50 minutes of play, the Bucknell women's soccer team suddenly had the tables turned by Mount St. Mary's, which scored three times in just over nine minutes to swipe a 3-0 decision over the Bison Wednesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Mount defeated Bucknell for the first time in 10 all-time meetings and improved to 3-3-2 on the season, while the injury-riddled Bison fell to 1-9.
Bucknell outshot Mount St. Mary's 10-3 in the first half while generating five quality scoring chances, and then the Bison nearly broke the ice 2:30 into the second stanza when Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller could not control a Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) shot and Tara Cort (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) volleyed the point-blank rebound over the bar.
The Mount all of the sudden shifted to a higher gear about 10 minutes into the second half, and a pretty passing combination resulted in the game's first goal. Kaylyn Mahon sent a pass in from the left wing that Sadie Winship one-timed through the Bucknell back line, setting up a breakaway for Jackie Corley, who buried her first career goal.
Only 2:44 later, Mount St. Mary's scored again when tall midfielder Sarah Malpezzi headed in Kaitlyn Chambers corner kick. Then at the 68-minute mark it went to 3-0 when Winship headed a pass to Kelly Baker in open space on the left side, and Baker scored on a low shot from a tough angle about 10 yards out.
The first half was all Bucknell. The first good scoring chance came about 16 minutes in when Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) outmuscled a defender for the ball at the top of the 18, then flicked a shot just wide of the right post.
Three minutes later Miller had to tip Dwornik's long shot over the crossbar. With 19 minutes left in the first half Matlack beat a defender with some nifty footwork then sent a nice pass in to Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional), but Miller made a nice save.
Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) barely missed the far post from 22 yards away in the 33rd minute, and Miller again had to punch a ball over the bar in the 35th after an ambitious chip shot from Doherty.
Even after falling behind 3-0, the Bison still generated some quality scoring chances, primarily from set pieces. Mount St. Mary's was whistled for 12 fouls in the second half and 18 for the game, and Bucknell also had nine corner kicks. That resulted in numerous free kicks being sent into the box, but the Mount defended them well. In the final few minutes Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) skimmed the crossbar with a shot and also saw a hard strike just miss the far post.
Bucknell finished with a 21-11 shot advantage and a 9-2 corner kick advantage. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) finished with two saves, while Miller had eight.
The Bison have two more contests coming up this weekend. They travel to Marist for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, then host Iona on Sunday at 4 p.m.
