LEWISBURG, Pa. - Media attention surrounding the Bucknell football program was high on Tuesday as new Bison head coach Joe Susan and four players made the journey to the annual Patriot League Football Media Day, held Tuesday at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. A good number of the approximately 30 media members in attendance at the event conducted one-on-one interviews with Susan and players Tyler Anderson, Kyle Boline, Josh Eden and Travis Nissley.
Bucknell returns 13 starters and 35 letterwinners in 2010 and was tabbed fifth in the league's preseason poll, which was officially announced near the beginning of Tuesday's program. The Bison are coming off a 4-7 campaign, but they defeated nationally ranked Holy Cross in the 2009 season finale. Susan, who was 10-0 in his only year as a head coach in 2000 at Davidson, was hired in January as the 26th head coach in program history.
Four different teams garnered at least one first-place vote in the preseason poll with Colgate predicted to finish in the top spot. The Raiders totaled a league-high six first-place votes and 46 points. Lafayette was predicted to finish second with two first-place votes and 36 points. Lehigh (three first-place votes, 35 points) and Holy Cross (one first-place vote, 34 points) rounded out the list of teams to receive first-place votes. Bucknell totaled 17 points, while Georgetown was predicted to finish in sixth with 12 points.
Patriot League associate member Fordham was not eligible for inclusion in the poll or preseason voting because it will not be able to compete for the Patriot League Championship in 2010, and its games against league members will not count towards the final standings.
Colgate senior quarterback Greg Sullivan was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Holy Cross senior defensive end Mude Ohimor was selected as the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
With Patriot League Football Media Day now complete, the next milestone on the Bucknell Football calendar is the beginning of preseason practice. The first session will take place this Saturday, Aug. 7, at 9 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Practice number two will be Sunday, Aug. 8, at 3:45 p.m.
Bucknell is just one day and one month from its Sept. 4 season opener at Duquesne. The Bison open their six-game home campaign Sept. 18 with a 1 p.m. contest against Dartmouth.
