PHILADELPHIA - Bucknell field hockey nearly overcame a two-goal deficit but was unable to slow a hot Saint Joseph's offense, falling 7-3 to the Hawks at Temple's Geasey Field on Sunday afternoon. Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) tied the game early in the second half, but four goals from the Hawks' (1-1) Nicole McCreight handed the Bison (0-2) their second loss of the season.
For the second game in a row, Weiss netted a goal off a penalty corner. Sunday's score knotted up the game at 2-2, helping to erase Saint Joseph's two-goal lead from the half. Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) had struck first for the Bison with a goal just 1:15 after play resumed. The goal was the first of the season for Bruvik and the 17th of her career.
Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) assisted on Weiss' goal. Raczek now has 30 helpers in her career, making her just the second Bison ever to reach the 30-assist mark. The senior is four assists shy of tying Amanda Faust's school record.
Just as Weiss renewed Bucknell's hope for its first win of the season, Saint Joseph's McCreight closed the door by scoring the next two goals of the game, both coming off rebounds. The Hawks forward capped off her scoring late in the game to make the score 6-3. Casey Fry then tallied her second goal of the day for the final of 7-3.
Bucknell freshman Jennifer LaBarre (Walnutport, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) broke up Saint Joseph's late scoring streak with her first career goal. The rookie registered the unassisted goal at the 20:05 mark to put the Bison within two at 5-3.
Bucknell outdid Saint Joseph's in penalty corners, earning a 14-3 edge. After two games, Bucknell has totaled 22 corners, compared to seven for its opponents.
The Bison also outshot the Hawks 18-14 in the game, although Saint Joseph's put all but one of those shots on goal. Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Kelly Swanick earned the win with seven saves and three goals allowed. Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (0-1) took the loss in her first career appearance for Bucknell after replacing Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Academy) in goal at halftime. The freshman made three saves and allowed five goals.
Bucknell will go for its first win of the season next weekend when it hosts Albany in its home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Graham Field. Live stats for the game will be available on GameTracker at BucknellBison.com.
