PHILADELPHIA - Bucknell field hockey struck early but could not hold on to its lead, dropping its season opener 4-2 to Temple at Geasey Field on Saturday afternoon. Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) each scored for the Bison (0-1), while Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) continued their climb up the career assists leader board.
Bucknell wasted little time getting the offense started, getting off three quick shots. Siegrist was the first to put hers on goal, and it paid off. The sophomore scored just 7:12 into play and earned the fourth goal of her career.
The Bison offense sputtered after that, however, as Temple (1-0) recorded the game's next 11 shots. The effort resulted in three unanswered goals from three different Owls and gave Temple a 3-1 advantage at halftime.
Bucknell got off to another hot start as the second half began. Less than two minutes after play resumed, the Bison drew a penalty corner that ended in a goal off the stick of Weiss and pulled the team within one.
Corners continue to be a strength of the Bison. After leading the Patriot League in penalty corners last year, Bucknell outdid Temple 8-4 on Saturday. That difference included a 5-0 edge in the second half.
The successful penalty corner resulted in assists for both Raczek and Kauffman. After also assisting on Siegrist's goal, Raczek's career total now stands at 29 and is five shy of tying former teammate Amanda Faust for the program record. Kauffman is also in the record hunt with 27 for her career, giving her sole possession of third on the list.
A fourth Owl recorded Temple's final goal at the 49:55 mark, allowing Bridget Settles to join teammates Taylor Musser, Molly Doyle and Madi Blyler in the scorers' column.
Bucknell's Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Academy) made four saves in her first career start in goal. Temple goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple made one save on the afternoon.
Bucknell will have an opportunity for its first win of the season tomorrow when it faces St. Joseph's in the final game of the Temple Invitational at 1 p.m. The Bison hold just a 1-0 advantage in the series.
