DeGennaro's Goal Lifts Bucknell Women's Soccer Past Ohio, 1-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A highlight-reel goal from junior Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) with 18 minutes remaining and a stellar defensive effort backstopped by junior goalkeeper Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet) helped the Bucknell women's soccer team to its first win of the year, 1-0 over Ohio in the opener of the Gamecock Courtyard Cup.
Now 1-1 on the season, the Bison turned in a complete team effort, as coach Ben Landis used every healthy field player on a warm day to turn aside a strong Mid-America Conference team that already boasted a 2-0 road win over Pittsburgh this season. Ohio posted a 6-3-2 record in the MAC a year ago and was picked third in the MAC Eastern Division this year.
A fairly even match remained scoreless until the 73rd minute, when DeGennaro broke in from the left wing and bent a 20-yard shot just inside the far upper-90. DeGennaro's fourth career tally held up as the game-winner as Bucknell allowed only one more shot the rest of the way, a last-minute attempt that was turned aside by Garrehy.
The Bison goalkeeper finished with six saves en route to her third career win and second shutout. Garrehy benefitted from a healthy back line in front of her. Bucknell welcomed back senior center backs Amanda Citron (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Kelsey Johnson (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), who were in fine form after missing the season opener at St. Bonaventure with minor injuries. Johnson played all 90 minutes while Citron, a team-co-captain, played 75. Senior Julianne Harris (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) was strong off the bench, and junior outside back Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.J./Peddie School) saved a goal by clearing a ball off the line on a corner kick.
Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) led all players with four shots, three of which were on frame.
Ohio goalie Mattie Liston, who was coming off the shutout against Pittsburgh, made seven saves. The Bobcats finished with a 16-13 shot advantage, but Bucknell led 8-7 in shots on goal. The Bison had six corner kicks to four for Ohio.
Bucknell will play its second game at the Gamecock Courtyard Cup on Sunday at noon against Louisville. The Cardinals were scheduled to play host South Carolina later on Friday evening.
