COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Louisville notched goals in each half to turn back Bucknell 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Gamecock Courtyard Cup. Both teams were coming off first-round victories -- Bucknell 1-0 over Ohio and Louisville 1-0 over No. 13 South Carolina -- and the Cardinals clinched the title behind goals from Angelika Uremovich and Julie Casselman.
Louisville (3-0) outshot Bucknell 19-8, and a five-save effort from tournament MVP Taylor Vancil kept the Bison (1-2) scoreless for the first time in three matches this season. Sophomore Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) made her first start in goal for Bucknell and finished with a career-high seven saves.
The Cardinals got on the board first 18:29 into the contest when Uremovich scored from about 35 yards out. Less than a minute later McDermott kept it a 1-0 game with a save on Christine Exeter, before Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina), Bucknell's goal-scorer on Friday night, launched the team's first shot in the 23rd minute.
Bucknell generated better chances in the second half, as freshman Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) had a shot saved off the line in the 65th minute and sophomore Emily Trosch (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) just missed wide in the 72nd.
Only about 40 seconds after the Trosch chance the ball was in Bucknell's net, as Louisville countered with Casselman finishing a play set up by Caitlin Rehder and Shannon Leamy.
Bucknell was able to fire off one more shot, but Vancil made a save on Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) in the 82nd minute.
After the game it was announced that DeGennaro, Doherty and senior Caitlin Holtz (Freehold, N.J./Peddie School) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
After playing their first three games away from home, the Bison now return home for three straight and seven of their next 10. Bucknell has a tough home weekend next week against foes from the Atlantic 10 and Big East. The Bison face Duquesne Friday at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium, then welcome nationally ranked Rutgers on Sunday at 2 p.m.
