LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell softball's Lauren Fry (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) was named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Thursday. Fry was a second team selection in the Mid-Atlantic Region after leading the Bison with a .404 batting average and earning places on the All-Patriot League First Team and Patriot League All-Tournament Team. The junior's honor comes on the eve of Bucknell's first ever NCAA Championship appearance where the team will face California at 5 p.m. on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to her team-best batting average, Fry also set squad-high marks in runs scored (42), hits (55) and walks (31). Her base-on-balls total is a single-season record at Bucknell, while her runs mark ranks second and is two shy of the program high.
Fry established herself as one of the top players in the Patriot League from the start. The center fielder set a career-best nine-game hitting streak in March, helping her to her first Patriot League Player of the Week citation. Fry ranked in the Patriot League's top five in nine different categories this spring, including first in runs and second in hits, on base percentage and total bases. She finished the season on a high note as well, becoming one of four Bison to hit better than .300 at the Patriot League Tournament.
The NFCA recognizes student-athletes from 10 regions. A total of 256 players from 116 different institutions comprise this season's regional teams. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
Bucknell's Patriot League Championship is the second in program history, and its 4-1 record in the tournament brought its season record to 28-18-1. The Bison's 28 wins ties the single-season program record.
Bucknell will face California in the first round of the NCAA Regional. The double-elimination tournament continues through Sunday, May 23 with the host Ohio State University and Kentucky also in Bucknell's region.
