LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's track and field claimed its eighth Patriot League weekly award of the outdoor season as Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) was named the league's Female Track Athlete of the Week on Monday. Moniz continued her stellar spring with a second-place finish in a career-best time in the 3000 meters at the Penn Relays last weekend.
Moniz ran the race of her Bucknell career in Philadelphia last Saturday, crossing the line in 9 minutes, 41.15 seconds. Not only did that time place her second in the race, but it also put her less than one second off the school record set by Julie Sweitzer in 1999. Now a junior, Moniz also ran a full 22 seconds faster than her previous career-best set as a freshman.
Although this is her first career Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week honor, Moniz has been lighting up the track all season. In four individual races this spring, the team co-captain has set program top-10 marks in three of them, including the 1500 and 5000 meters. Moniz has also qualified for the ECAC Championships in both the 3000 and 5000 meters.
The Bucknell women's squad has now won eight Patriot League track, field and rookie of the week honors this spring. Army finishes the voting period with five awards, and no other school has claimed more than two.
Bucknell will return to the track for the Patriot League Championships at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on April 30-May 1. The Bison women will be looking to defend their outdoor title from a year ago in addition to completing the Triple Crown - league titles in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track and field.
