PHILADELPHIA - Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) won the 3000 steeplechase and Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) finished second in the 3000 meters, recording some of the top times in program history as Bucknell track and field opened competition at the Penn Relays on Thursday. Moniz fell just shy of the school record with a time of 9 minutes, 41.15 seconds to help lead the Bison at Franklin Field.
Huebner's victory in the college section of the steeplechase came with a time of 9:00.79, which ranks seventh all-time at Bucknell. Not to be outdone, Moniz claimed the second fastest time at Bucknell and is less than one second behind Julie Sweitzer's school record in the 3000. The current Bison's time on Thursday was also 22 seconds faster than her previous career best, which placed her in the top 10 two years ago as a freshman.
Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) joined Moniz with an impressive performance in the 3000. The sophomore was 13th in the race, but claimed third on the program's top-10 list with a time of 9:54.30. That smashed her previous career best by nearly 20 seconds as well and put her in the record books for the 3000 meters for the first time in her career.
"Our distance kids ran some great races on a beautiful night. It's great to get Fulmer and Moniz qualified for the ECAC Championships," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Huebner's time should move him up the charts in the NCAA ratings."
The remaining Bison to compete on day one made their appearances in the field events. Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) threw a season-best 137 feet, 4 inches in the discus, finishing 13th overall. She was also 12th in the shot put with a mark of 42-3 ½. Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 43-4 ½. She also placed 12th in the hammer at 161-1.
Also competing in the throws events were Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) in the discus and Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) in the javelin. Misko was 18th (131-7), while Rycek took 13th (121-1).
Rounding out the Bison competitors were Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazelton) and Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty). Mantush finished in a tie for 14th in the high jump (5-5 3/4). Frey tied for 28th in the pole vault (11-0 ¼).
Bucknell will continue at the Penn Relays tomorrow. On the schedule for the Bison are Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) in the high jump and Jonathan Lockhart (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) in the shot put, as well as the shuttle hurdle, distance medley and 4x400 relays.
