NESHANIC STATION, N.J. -- Senior Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) fired a 1-under-par 71 and the Bucknell men's golf team placed four players in the top six en route to a convincing team victory at the Peacock Invitational, hosted by St. Peter's College Tuesday at Neshanic Valley GC.
It was coach Jim Cotner's 15th tournament victory, all of them coming in the last seven years. Three of those have some at the Peacock Invitational. This one came without too much difficulty, as the Bison posted a 3-over-par 291 total, with all four scorers shooting 74 or better.
Pike's 1-under 71 was his best of the year. He tied for first place with Iona's Dylan Newman, but Newman was awarded the first-place medal on a match of cards.
Senior Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and freshman J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) both posted 1-over 73s. For Schneiter it was a continuation of an outstanding spring season. He lowered his average to 75.3 and finished within a shot of the lead for the second time in the last four weeks (he lost in a playoff at the Monmouth Invitational in late-March). Szmadzinski's 73 equalled his personal best, and in relation to par the 1-over total was a new career standard.
Sophomore Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), who was Bucknell's low man last week at the Navy Invtiational (T-5th), continued his stong play with a 2-over 74, putting him in a tie for sixth place. Bachman's spring scoring average of 74.4 is second on the team.
Junior Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) also competed and carded a 79.
Bucknell won the 18-hole event by eight shots over Iona (299). Host St. Peter's was third at 303, followed by Monmouth (305), Manhattan (311), Fairleigh Dickinson (315), La Salle (326), Hofstra (337) and Wagner (343).
Next up for the Bison is the Patriot League Championship this Saturday and Sunday at Colgate's Seven Oaks GC. Bucknell has won three of the last four Patriot League titles and is the defending champion.
