Bucknell Track & Field Readies for Penn Relays, Bloomsburg Invite

Penn Relays Schedule/Results

LEWISBURG, Pa. - In its final weekend before hosting the Patriot League Championships, Bucknell track and field will split forces, sending 23 student-athletes to the Penn Relays April 22-24 in Philadelphia while also competing at the Bloomsburg Invitational on Saturday. The Bison will open their Penn Relays at 10 a.m. on Thursday with the women's high jump, while action at Bloomsburg is slated for a noon start.

MEN'S NOTEBOOK

The Bison won the Bucknell Team Challenge last Saturday by the slimmest of margins. Bucknell's first-place point total was 194.66, while second-place Penn State came in at 194.33. The difference came in the 110 meter hurdles where Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) and a Nittany Lion racer tied for fifth and received .33 points apiece for their finish.

The team victory was the second of the season for the men's team. They also were the top squad at the Maryland Invitational in March.

Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) made his first appearance this spring and made it a memorable one. The senior won both the long jump and the triple jump. Also winning along the way were Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) (400H), Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) (100m), Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) (javelin) and Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) (110HH).

Daniel Markwalter (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T) earned his first Patriot League/M-F Athletic Male Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The freshman finished sixth in the pole vault at the Bucknell Team Challenge after clearing a career-best 15 feet, 1 inch.

Arent moved into third place on the Bucknell top-10 list in the 110 hurdles. The sophomore finished second in the event last week with a time of 14.60 seconds. Bell also secured a spot in the program's top 10 in the 200 meters, finishing second in 10.61.

Yehl has been dominating in the 110 hurdles this season. The senior opened the year with a second-place finish at the Maryland Invitational and took sixth at the Colonial Relays. Since then, he has won his last two races, including the Bucknell Team Challenge where he ran a season-best 14.55.

Bucknell continues to move up the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region poll. The Bison are now ranked eighth in the region as a team, up one spot from a week ago.

WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK

Bucknell took second place in the team standings at the Bucknell Team Challenge last weekend, trailing Penn State 265-158. That tied the Bison's best finish of the season as they also took second at the Maryland Invitational earlier this year.

Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem), Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and the 4x800 relay all earned individual victories at the meet. Janda won the 800 meters before anchoring the winning relay along with Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional), Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands). Musante was the victor in the hammer throw for the first time this season.

Musante did more than just win the hammer, however. The senior also finished second in the shot put and fifth in the discus, leading to her secon Patriot League/M-F Athletic Female Field Athlete of the Week award in as many weeks. She also posted ECAC-qualifying marks in the hammer throw (170-7) and the shot put (45-4 ¼). Musante has been recognized as the league's top field athlete five times this year.

Bucknell's javelin throwers have certainly been earning their keep this spring. Out of 15 opportunities to place, Kat Folger (Groton Mass./Bishop Guertin), Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area), Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Sarah Trahan (Sandown, N.H./Timberlane Regional) have finished in the top 10 a total of 14 times. Rycek also won the Bison Outdoor Classic, while Siegrist claimed gold at the Maryland Invitational.

The Bison are holding steady in the USFTCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region poll. They are ranked 12th as a team for the second consecutive week.

LOOKING AHEAD
Bucknell will head into its championship season, hosting the Patriot League meet April 30-May 1 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison women will be looking to complete their third Triple Crown after taking the league's cross country and indoor track and field titles. The men's squad is competing for its first team victory since 1991.
