LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite a six-point afternoon from junior midfielder Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, Pa./North Rockland), the Bucknell women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-12 decision to Colgate Saturday afternoon at chilly Graham Field. Kate Bergstrom scored four goals and Meghan Lawler had three goals and five assists to help the Raiders move into a tie for first place in the Patriot League standings.
Braun tallied four goals and two assists, while Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) registered two goals and two assists after being honored prior to the game for becoming Bucknell's all-time leading scorer. Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) added a pair of goals for the Bison, who fell to 2-14 with one game remaining at Navy next Saturday.
Colgate (9-6, 4-1) outshot Bucknell 41-20 and had a major time-of-possession edge due to a 21-11 margin in draw controls, but the Bison managed to stay in it for most of the afternoon. The Raiders broke open a 2-2 game with five straight goals in a span of only 3:32, but their cushion fluctuated between three and five goals all the way into the final seven minutes of the game.
Bucknell outscored Colgate 4-2 over the final 18 minutes of the first half. Donohue fed Braun for a pair of goals during that span, and Paige Cobbs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) cut the margin to 9-6 at the half.
Colgate punched in the first two goals of the second period, and later they had a 13-8 lead when Devine and Braun scored back-to-back goals, the latter on a terrific length-of-field run, to bring the Bison within 13-10. Bucknell had a possession to get it within two with about nine minutes left, but a turnover turned into a Katie Sullivan goal the other way. Then Courtney Miller and Bergstrom scored just 12 seconds apart to put Colgate up 16-10 with 6:42 to play.
Turnovers were a major factor in the game. The Bison committed 25 miscues, including several of the unforced variety while the game was still well within reach.
Most of the goals were scored from close range, leaving the two goalies without much chance. Bucknell's Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) finished with eight saves, while Colgate's Christina Roa managed only two.
Prior to the game, Bucknell honored its six seniors: Donohue, Katie Fox (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School), Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), Stephanie Stevens (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Kendall Thibeault (Fallston, Md./St. Paul's). Fox, who is out with a torn knee ligament, was announced in the starting lineup and came off the field after the opening draw.
Braun now has 36 goals and 10 assists for 46 points on the season. She needs just one more goal and four more points to enter the top 10 on the Bucknell single-season lists in those categories. She now has 15 points in her last two games after racking up nine against Howard last week.
With Lehigh defeating Navy on Saturday, there is now a three-way tie atop the Patriot League leaderboard with Colgate, Lehigh and Navy all at 4-1. The Bison will finish up at Navy next Saturday at 3 p.m.
