CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Bucknell senior Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) added another chapter to his terrific collegiate career on Sunday, firing a 6-under-par 66 to claim the individual title at the Lafayette Invitational at Center Valley GC. The victory was the fourth of Cohen's career, set the program record for score in relation to par, and propelled Bucknell to a second-place team finish after a final-round 289.
Cohen's 66 was the second-lowest gross score in Bucknell history, just missing the 65 shot by Ben Pellicani at the 2005 Patriot League Championship at the Bucknell Golf Club. But Pellicani's score and the three other 66s in program history all came on par-70 courses, so Cohen becomes the first Bison to complete a round at 6-under.
Cohen made seven birdies on the day, with his lone blemish a three-putt bogey. His first-round 75 in Saturday's cold, windy conditions was the second-best round of the day, and his 3-under 141 was good for a three-stroke victory over Binghamton's Jake Katz, who also shot 66 on Sunday, and Siena's David Gushee, the first-round leader.
Katz's 66 helped Binghamton hold off the Bison by just two shots for the team title. The Bearcats finished at 600 over 36 holes, while Bucknell totaled 602. Third-place Lafayette finished eight shots behind the Bison.
Cohen's record-setting day overshadowed an outstanding 2-under 70 from Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor). After struggling in the windy conditions a day earlier, Mattingly hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation en route to his third career round of 2-under par. He finished tied for 18th, second-best on the team.
Also for the Bison on Sunday, Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) carded a 75, Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) had a 78, and Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished with an 82.
The Bison were the best of the five Patriot League teams in the field, finishing ahead of Lafayette, Lehigh, Colgate and Army.
Bucknell's 289 team score was tied for 11th-best in program history and was the best of the spring so far. In the fall, the Bison put up a program-record 276 at the Bucknell Invitational.
All four of Cohen's wins have come in the last 12 months. Last spring he won the Caves Valley Intercollegiate and the Patriot League Championship in consecutive weeks, and he won the Bucknell Invitational back in September.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend at the Navy Spring Invitational.
