Bucknell Men's Tennis Sweeps Past Hofstra

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis earned its first sweep of the season, handing Hofstra a 7-0 loss at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon. The Bison (4-10) kicked things off with doubles wins from Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) at No. 2 and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) at No. 3 before taking all six singles matches against the Pride (1-10).
The second and third doubles tandems had an easy time of their Hofstra opponents as Cohenca and Marcil dispatched Tyler Allen and Josh Levinson by a smooth 8-1 score. Katten and Zimmer, who improved their pairing record to 3-0, defeated Pedro Gimenez and Johan Vila at 8-3.
Much like their last match against Navy, the Bison nearly had the doubles sweep, but Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) narrowly missed their own win, 9-7.
Kovic got a bit of redemption later in the day, defeating Ben Thompson-Star at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4. Cohenca, Katten and Zimmer continued to get the better of their opponents. Cohenca won his second match over Levinson 6-3, 7-6, while Zimmer was victorious over Gimenez again 6-1, 6-0. Katten needed more time to collect his second win over Vila, but after falling 6-1 in the first set, the Bison freshman bounced back to take the second two, 6-4 and 6-0.
Also winning were Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) at No. 4 singles and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) at the sixth spot. Both players defeated their opponents in straight sets.
Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday, April 3 when it takes on Colgate. Play at the Varsity Tennis Courts is set for 2 p.m.
