Bucknell Women's Rowing Topples Duke at Occoquan Sprints

FAIRFAX, Va. (Occoquan Reservoir) – For the second consecutive Sunday the Bucknell women's rowing team competed in the state of Virginia and had a strong day at the Occoquan Sprints, advancing six boats to the finals. Three Bison boats claimed first in finals races, while five claimed first in the heats.
The Bucknell varsity eight had an impressive showing, particularly in the finals. After edging second-place Old Dominion by less than a second in the heat, the varsity eight trimmed more than 33 seconds off its time in the final and finished first, more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Duke. No other boat was within 10 seconds of the Bison and Blue Devils.
Three Bison boats were in the second varsity eight final, claiming three of the top four spots. Two Bucknell second varsity eight boats won their heats to advance to the finals. The fastest of the three second varsity eights won the final by more than 10 seconds over second-place Duke.
The novice eight had an easy day, winning its heat by 23 seconds and the final by nearly 14.
The lightweight four was the lone event which Bucknell did not win, but the Bison did claim second to Loyola (Md.). The varsity four won its heat, but a finals race was not contested.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend at the Murphy Cup. The Bison have won the Overall Points Trophy at the prestigious event three straight years.
