Bucknell Women's Rowing Wins Overall Points Trophy at Murphy Cup for Fourth Consecutive Year

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) – The Bucknell women's rowing team had four boats win finals races as it claimed the overall points trophy at the Murphy Cup for the fourth consecutive year Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The Bison varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and lightweight eight each captured gold medals, equaling the second-most Murphy Cup victories in program history.
A total of seven Bison boats competed in the finals, establishing a new program record.
The varsity eight won at the Murphy Cup for the fourth straight year, defeating Saint Joseph's and Patriot League rival Navy in the final.
Bucknell's second varsity eight won its heat and then proceeded to defeat runner-up Navy by nearly eight seconds in the final. The Bison's lightweight eight also competed in a heat and placed third, but did not row in the final due to its commitment to the lightweight eight final, which it won over MIT.
The novice eight also swept its heat and finals races. Fellow Patriot League member Navy was fifth in the final, while Saint Joseph's was the runner-up, nearly three seconds behind the Bison.
Two varsity four boats advanced to the finals Saturday after winning their heats. However, the Bison “A” boat took third in the final and the “B” claimed fifth.
The lightweight four took second in both its heat and final, but was able to pass Penn State in the final after finishing second to the Nittany Lions in the heat.
Bucknell will next be in action when it hosts Old Dominion and Rhode Island on Saturday, April 10, on Pinchot Lake in Lewisberry, Pa. The Bison will also host Kansas at the same location the following day.
