Bucknell Men's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to Navy in Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis took two doubles matches from Navy for the first time in more than 50 years and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) earned a win at No. 6 singles, but the Bison could not pull off the upset, falling to the Midshipmen 5-2 at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. Bucknell falls to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in the Patriot League.
Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) kicked things off with an easy 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Navy's (8-10, 2-0) Zach Nicholson and Marcus Rebersak. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) kept things going with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 position, defeating Owen Bullard and Nicholas Gutsche.
It was the first time since at least 1953 that Bucknell, which is 0-32 all-time against Navy, has won two of three doubles matches or earned the doubles point against the Midshipmen.
Unfortunately for the Bison, they were unable to keep up the momentum of their doubles success. They did not go down easily, however, as four sets were decided by tiebreakers and Maxson rallied from a set down to claim Bucknell's lone victory at singles.
After losing the opening set to Ramsey Lemaich 6-0, Maxson took the final two sets 6-4 and 6-3. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) tried to force a similar situation in their matches with second-set tiebreakers but fell just short. Cohenca lost 7-6, 7-6 to Marcus Rebersak at No. 2 singles, while Hascoe dropped his No. 4 match, 6-3, 7-6 to Nicholson.
Maxson has now won each of his last three singles matches and four of his last five. The sophomore's spring singles record now sits at 5-5.
Bucknell will be back in action on Wednesday, March 31 when it hosts Hofstra. Action at the Varsity Tennis Courts is set for 3 p.m.
