LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Backed by a career-best, 2-under-par 70 from senior Ryan Schneiter (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), the Bucknell men's golf team is tied for first place after the first of two rounds of the Monmouth Hawk Spring Invitational at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. The Bison shot 295 on Saturday, tying Rider for the team lead with 18 holes to come on Sunday.
Schneiter shot 35 on both sides and posted an under-par round for the first time in his career. Last fall he shot even par at Colonial GC in the second round of the William & Mary Invitational.
Schneiter is second individually, trailing Rider's Eric Lafante by one shot, and he is one of three Bison in the top 10. Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) are tied for eighth after posting 2-over 74s.
Also for the Bison, Andrew Wallisch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) shot 77 and Parker Phillips (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) carded an 80.
Bucknell and Rider are both six shots clear of the next group of teams. Host Monmouth and Sacred Heart both opened with rounds of 301, while Saint Francis (Pa.) rounds out the top five at 302.
The 12-team field concludes play on Sunday.
