Bucknell showed the Mountaineers a different lineup, playing Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) together at second doubles, and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) at third doubles. The change proved to be a good one as both teams won their respective matches. Zimmer and Katten defeated Mike Salomon and Andrew Marinucci 8-3, while Marcil and Maxson came out ahead of Jastin Mostowwt and Taylor Place 8-0 to give the Bison the doubles point.
Those four Bison also earned wins in singles play. Katten and Maxson defeated Mostowtt and Marinucci, respectively, in straight sets. Marcil and Zimmer each had a tougher road, needing super tiebreakers to decide their matches. Marcil won the first set over Place easily at 6-2, but Place came back in the second for the 7-5 win. Marcil's 10-7 finish gave him the victory in his first spring match.
Unlike his teammate, Zimmer had to bounce back from a first-set loss to Matt Blake. After dropping the first 6-3, Zimmer took the second set by the same score. The freshman had the final word against the Mountaineer, 10-7, in the deciding breaker.
Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) also won his match at first singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Patrick Plastow. That gives the junior his third straight win at singles.
Bucknell will open Patriot League play on Saturday, hosting Navy at the Bucknell Tennis Courts at 10 a.m.
