LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell softball's Lauren Fry (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield) earned her first Patriot League Player of the Week honor on Monday, days after producing a seven-game performance in which she hit .524 with three extra-base hits and a team-leading nine RBI. The junior also scored the game-winning run in a 7-6 victory over Harvard and helped the Bison finish 3-4 on their Spring Break trip in California last week.
Fry led Bucknell in a number of categories over the course of the week, including runs (9), hits (11), at-bats (21), walks (6) and total bases (17) in addition to batting average and runs batted in. A number of those stats came in key situations as she kept Bucknell's hopes alive late in games. Fry's RBI triple in the sixth inning tied the showdown with the Crimson. She scored the game winner later in the frame to give Bucknell its third win of the season.
Fry came through under pressure again in Bucknell's next contest, going up against Utah Valley. The outfielder led off the seventh inning with a single and eventually scored to send the game vs. the Wolverines into extra innings.
Fry gathered two hits and scored twice in each of those games. She went on to record her third multi-hit game of the trip with a 3-for-3 performance against North Dakota. Fry also scored twice and connected for her first home run of the season in the Bison's 7-4 victory.
With her offensive success last week, Fry posted a career-best nine-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit 10 of the team's first 11 games. That production gives her the league's top average at .455. Fry has also failed to commit an error while starting every contest in center field. She leads the Patriot League in on-base percentage (.561) and ranks among the top 10 in runs (13), hits (15), RBI (11) and total bases (21).
The Player of the Week accolade is the first of Fry's career, but she is no stranger to league honors. Fry was named the 2008 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on three occasions.
Bucknell is 5-6 on the year. It will be back in action March 27-28 at Coppin State. Saturday's doubleheader in Baltimore, Md., is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's single game is scheduled for noon.
