Bucknell Women's Tennis Wins Second Straight, 6-1 Over Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis won its second straight match and the team of Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) kept a streak alive of their own as the Bison defeated Villanova 6-1 at the Villanova Tennis Complex on Saturday. Varela and Lucido won their eighth straight doubles match, helping Bucknell improve to 4-5 on the season.
Bucknell started the spring with four straight losses. Since then, the Bison have won four of their last five, including sweeps over Niagara, St. Bonaventure and North Georgia.
Varela and Lucido brought their doubles record together to a team-best 8-2 this spring by defeating the Wildcats' Carla Erskine and Allison Solberg 8-3 at the first position. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) also won, 9-8 over Kristin Gobberg and Courtney Reed, to give Bucknell the doubles point.
The streak at doubles was not the only one Varela kept alive. The senior also improved her singles winning streak to seven matches with an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Reed. Varela has not dropped a match in singles or doubles since Bucknell faced Pittsburgh on Feb. 13.
Lucido stayed on her own winning path, defeating Erskine 6-0, 6-3 at second singles. The Bison junior has now won seven of her last nine matches.
Bucknell also earned victories in fourth through sixth singles as Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Casey each won in straight sets.
The Bison will be back in action on Tuesday, March 23, taking on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.
