Bucknell Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight in 5-2 Victory Over Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Bucknell women's tennis won its third consecutive match with a 5-2 decision over Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., on Wednesday afternoon. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) each claimed two individual victories, propelling the Bison (5-5) to their fifth team win in six matches.
Varela and Lucido extended a winning streak of their own in doubles with a victory over Emily Bolchoz and Renee Deane. With the 8-3 final in its favor, the Bison duo won its ninth straight contest. Varela also brought her singles streak to eight consecutive wins, defeating Chelsea Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
Varela and Lucido need just one more win at doubles to tie their career high of 10 straight victories. Those streaks came with different partners with Lucido's successful stretch coming last season and Varela's three years ago during her freshman campaign.
Contributing to Bucknell's sweep of doubles action was a win at No. 2 by Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) over Johnson and Emily Grugan, 8-4. Iepuras and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) also won at No. 3 doubles, 8-7 over Emma Haley and Carly Landini.
Lucido collected a win at No. 2 singles, defeating Bolchoz for the second time today, 6-0, 6-4. Joining her in the two-time winners' circle was Iepuras, who also beat her singles opponent for the second time in the contest. Iepuras claimed the 6-3, 6-0 over Landini.
Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) took the fourth singles win for the Bison. The junior finished 6-1, 6-1 over Grugan, bringing her own winning streak to three matches.
Bucknell will return to its home courts for its Patriot League opener on Saturday. The Bison will host Navy at 2 p.m. at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
