LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis welcomed Navy to the Patriot League with a 6-1 defeat at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Bison (6-5, 1-0) swept the doubles matches and took five of six singles contests to hand the Midshipmen (7-3, 0-1) a loss in their first ever match in the league. Bucknell has now won each of its last four matches and six of its last seven.
The Bison took the winning edge right off the bat, getting a trio of easy victories at doubles. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) had the closest match at 8-4 over Dye Das and Stefanie Ton. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) won their 10th consecutive doubles match together, defeating Emani Decquir and Brittney Boucher 8-2.
Lucido and Varela have now tied the longest doubles winning streak of their careers. Each Bison reached 10 victories in previous seasons with different partners, making the current stretch of matches their most successful together.
Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) completed the doubles sweep, defeating Lindsay Olsen and Julie Dias, 8-1.
Varela also extended her winning streak at singles to nine matches with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Decquir. The Bison senior has not dropped a match in singles or doubles since Feb. 13 and has improved her career combined record to 130-55.
Lucido, Iepuras and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each brought their own singles winning streaks to four matches. Lucido defeated Boucher 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 position, while Iepuras won 6-3, 6-2 over Das at No. 4. Rottkamp took down Olsen in straight sets as well, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.
With her singles victory, Iepuras also moved up the all-time wins list at Bucknell. The sophomore is now tied for 15th with a career record of 40-14.
Rounding out the scoring for Bucknell was Casey. The last match on court, the Bison defeated Natalie Houle 6-1, 6-4 to close out the day.
