Bucknell Women's Tennis Streaks Past Hofstra, 6-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis brought its winning streak to five matches with a 6-1 victory over Hofstra at Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) also set career-best winning streaks as both players won their doubles and singles matches.
With the team win, Bucknell improves its record to 7-5 overall. A 0-4 start for the Bison has turned out to be no cause for concern as they have now won seven of their last eight matches. The victory also allows Bucknell to stay undefeated at 6-0 all-time against Hofstra.
Lucido and Varela won their 11th consecutive doubles match, defeating Sonia Tsay and Lauren Clifton in easy fashion, 8-2. That marks the most successful stretch for both players whose previous bests had been 10 matches earlier in their careers. Varela also won a career-best 10th straight singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Clifton later in the day.
Although not a career mark, Lucido's win over Christie Gattelaro was the fifth straight for the Bison junior. Lucido won 6-4 in the first before having to battle through a difficult second set that ended with Lucido on top 7-6 after a tiebreak.
Several other streaks were maintained for the Bison, as Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School), Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and the doubles team of Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) each won their fifth straight match.
Only Iepuras faced some trouble in her No. 4 singles match, needing three sets to get the victory over Tsay. Iepuras won the opening set 6-2 before dropping the second 6-4. The Bison sophomore righted herself in the deciding set, claiming a 6-2 decision in the third.
Bucknell will look to keep all of its many streaks alive on Saturday, April 3 when it takes on Colgate in its second Patriot League match. Action at the Varsity Tennis Courts begins at 10 a.m.
