Bucknell Women's Tennis Stays Perfect in Patriot League with 6-1 Win Over Colgate

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis continued its winning ways with a 6-1 decision over Colgate at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday morning. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) won their 12th consecutive doubles match, Varela brought her winning streak in singles to 11 contests and the Bison (8-5, 2-0) claimed their sixth straight team victory to remain undefeated in the Patriot League.
Bucknell is one of just two teams to maintain a perfect record in Patriot League action. They join the 4-0 Army Black Knights atop the league standings. The Bison have also been nearly perfect in the last month of play. Bucknell is 6-0 since March 20 and 8-1 since their first match in March.
Helping the team to that tally is the consistent doubles tandem of Varela and Lucido who defeated Colgate's (6-6, 1-2) Elise DeRose and Cameron Williams 8-2 at the No. 1 position. The Bison swept doubles play, getting wins from Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) at No. 2 and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) at the third position as well.
Varela also made quick work of DeRose in singles. The Bison senior defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-0 to improve on the longest winning streak of her career.
Lucido won at No. 2 singles, earning the 6-2, 6-1 decision over Samantha Inacker. Iepuras won over Jackie Stimmel at the fourth position by a nearly identical score at 6-1, 6-2. Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) won at No. 5 as well, defeating Stephanie Brown 6-4, 6-4. All three players currently hold six-match winning streaks.
Rounding out the scoring for Bucknell was Casey at 6-3, 6-2 over Meredith Rock.
Bucknell will return to the courts on Thursday, April 8 when it hosts Lehigh at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
