
Bucknell Women's Tennis Sails Past North Georgia, 7-0

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Bucknell women's tennis won its third match of the season with a 7-0 sweep over North Georgia in Hilton Head, S.C., on Wednesday morning. With two wins on the day, Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) moved into the top five at Bucknell in singles, doubles and all-time victories. The team win also helped give head coach Rebecca Helt her 200th career victory.
At the day's end, Helt improved her career coaching record to 200-220 as both the women's and men's squads defeated North Georgia. The men won 5-1 over the Saints following the women's match to give the coach the milestone.
Varela and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) started off the day with an 8-1 win at first doubles over Brittany Smith and Stasa Vujosevic. The win was the seventh straight for the Bucknell (2-5) duo. Varela also won her sixth consecutive match, again topping Vujosevic 6-1, 6-0 at first singles.
With the strong outing, Varela is now tied for fifth all-time at Bucknell with former teammate Paulina Gamboa in career singles wins (62-25), tied for fourth with Tanya Sichko in career doubles victories (62-30) and fifth in combined victories (124-55).
Ensuring the doubles point for Bucknell were the teams of Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) with an 8-6 victory at the second position, and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) with an easy 8-0 win at the third spot.
The singles matches went even more smoothly for the Bison as every match was decided in straight sets. Lucido defeated Juliana Moscoso Chiong, 6-0, 6-3, while Calcaterra won over Ashley Marie Jordan 6-1, 6-0. Iepuras earned her third singles win of the spring season with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jordan Poole.
Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Casey defeated their respective North Georgia opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Bucknell will return from its Spring Break trip to take on Villanova at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 in Villanova, Pa.
