LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's basketball's Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) and Joyce Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team selections, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Krewson and Novacek were two of three Patriot League student-athletes to be recognized on the district level.
With its two selections, Bucknell became one of six schools nation-wide to place two student-athletes on an All-District First Team. Joining Bucknell on that list were Texas, Kansas State, Creighton, Middle Tennessee State and Coastal Carolina.
This is the second consecutive year in which Novacek has earned Academic All-District First Team honors. The last Bison to be named to back-to-back teams was Jennifer Walz, who earned three-straight selections from 1986-87 to 1988-89.
Novacek has earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.91 while majoring in management. A consistent member of the Bucknell dean's list and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the junior is also active in the community, volunteering with local youth basketball teams and working as a house manager assistant at a school for the mentally and physically disabled.
Novacek has been equally successful on the court, drawing a starting assignment in 44 straight games, the most on the team. She recently moved into the top 10 in Bucknell history in career blocked shots and currently ranks seventh all-time with 76 rejections. Novacek has set career highs in single-game scoring and rebounding this season having tallied 22 points at Niagara and 15 boards against Fordham. The forward has earned four double-doubles this season as well, bringing her career total to eight.
Novacek is averaging a career-best 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this season. Her scoring average ranks second on the team to Krewson, while her rebounding average leads all Bison and ranks second in the Patriot League.
Krewson was named to an Academic All-District Team in the first year of eligibility for the honor. She is joined by Texas' Ashleigh Fontenette and Oregon's Amanda Johnson's as the only three sophomores in the country to be voted First Team selections.
Krewson has earned a perfect 4.0 GPA twice in three semesters, bringing her cumulative GPA to 3.97. An English major and Spanish minor, Krewson recently received the Bucknell President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. She also has been named to the university's Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll several times. Her classroom success has expanded to the rest of the university and community, as she is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Krewson has volunteered with the Bison at local food banks and with youth basketball teams as well.
On the court, Krewson has been making quite the name for herself offensively. The guard currently has a 10-game streak of scoring in double figures, a stretch that was ignited with a 30-point performance against Lycoming last December. She now has three career games with 20 or more points, all coming this season. Thos numbers have helped Krewson claim the Patriot League Player of the Week accolade in early January.
With 12.2 points per game this year, Krewson leads Bucknell and is ranked seventh in the Patriot League in scoring. She is also among the league leaders in field goal percentage (.426) and three-point field goal percentage (.412).
Army's Erin Anthony was the only other Patriot League member named to an Academic All-District First Team.
Selections to the Academic All-District First Team are eligible for Academic All-America honors to be voted on later this month. In order to be considered for Academic All-America honors, a candidate must be at least a sophomore with a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or significant reserve on his/her team. Bucknell ranks fifth among all Division I institutions with 118 national Academic All-Americans.
Bison women's basketball has had 10 Academic All-Americans since 1979-80.
Bucknell is 7-13 overall and 3-4 in the Patriot League. The team will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Navy at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison will also host their annual alumni game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
