ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Matthew Segar and diver David Magaro each posted second-place finishes and both Bison relay squads earned silver medals for the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team on the second day of the Patriot League Championships Friday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. The Bison remained in second place in the overall team standings.
Navy extended its lead and virtually locked up the top position as the Mids finished day two with 670 points. The Bison are second with 420 points, 58 ahead of third-place Army. Fourth-place Lehigh is still in contention with 275 points entering the final day of competition.
Segar had Bucknell's best individual finish in the pool, taking second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 38.50 seconds. That time moved him into second on the Bison all-time list. Christian Treat placed sixth in the same race, recording the ninth-best time in program history (1:41.45) during the morning prelims.
Magaro, Bucknell's lone diver, had his best outing of the season off the one-meter board at the right time. He scored a 264.05 in the prelims to finish second. He then tacked more than 30 points onto that score in the finals and finished with a career-best 295.65. That mark was nearly 16 points higher than his previous best and was 25 points better than third-place Brendan Georgas from Army. Magaro's score ranks second on the program's all-time list.
One day after finishing third in the 200 individual medley, Daniel Fletcher led six Bison scorers in the 100 backstroke with another third-place showing. His time of 50.75 in the final was actually slightly slower than his 50.51 prelim time that moved him into a tie for third on the program's top-10 list. Taylor Harris and Gonzalo DeLeon also swam sub-52 seconds as they finished seventh and eighth. Spencer Hallowell, Bryce Suchomel and David Iselin were grouped together in 12th, 13th and 14th.
Nathaniel Frye gave the Bison five top-three finishes in the seven events contested Friday as he claimed third in the 100 breast. He finished in 57.08, but his prelim time of 57.05 was better and places him fifth on the top-10 list. Brett Carey joined Fletcher in the top 10 of Friday's race, while Evan Palumbo also score points with a 14th-place showing.
The Bison had a quartet of scorers in both the 400 IM and 100 fly. Billy Krause led the way in the 400 IM with a sixth-place finish in 4:00.02. Right behind were Jonathan Podniesinski (4:02.13) and three-time Patriot League champion Luke Trafton (4:03.60) as Navy and Bucknell accounted for seven of the top eight finishers. Krause and Podniesinski now rank second and third on the Bison top-10 list for the 400 IM.
No new top-10 marks were set in the 100 fly, which was the lone event the Bison did not have a swimmer in the “A” final. However, Bucknell still had four scorers as Harris, Eric Sokolosky, Michael Volpe and Suchomel finished 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th, respectively.
Using two different foursomes, Bucknell finished second in both the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. The medley relay swam the third-best time in program history (1:31.92), while the free relay's 6:42.57 is the No. 2 time in school annals.
The Patriot League Championships will wrap up Saturday with the prelims at 10:30 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. The Bison have a chance to post their third consecutive runner-up finish.
