Sokolosky Wins 100 Freestyle, Bucknell Men's Swimming and Diving Places Sixth at ECAC Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) won the 100-yard freestyle to claim Bucknell's third ECAC individual title in the last decade and Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) posted three top-eight finishes as the Bison men's swimming and diving team placed sixth at this past weekend's ECAC Championships, held at Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.
Bucknell was one of three Patriot League teams to compete in the 21-team field. Navy took first with 673.5 points, while Lafayette was 17th with 26. The Bison totaled 246 points as eight members of the team competed at the weekend-long event.
Sokolosky won the 100 free in 45.58 seconds, missing a new career-best time by one-tenth of a second. He had finished second in the prelims to Harvard's Nicholas DuCille by .28 seconds, but came back to edge him out by .02 in the final.
Sokolosky joined an exclusive Bison group to win ECAC titles since the turn of the century. Only Adam Freeman, who claimed the one-meter diving competition in 2002, and current senior Luke Trafton, who won the 1,650 free in 2008, have won ECAC crowns over the last 10 years. Bucknell's last 100 free individual champion was Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jay Gross in 1993.
In addition to his victory in the 100 free, Sokolosky finished third in the 50 free and 27th in the 200 free.
Fletcher had a strong three-day meet with three top-eight finishes. He took fifth in the 200 individual medley, sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 200 backstroke.
Freshman Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) also scored in three events, and he set two individual top-10 times in the process. He finished fifth in the finals of the 100 breaststroke in 57.17, placing him seventh on the Bison all-time list. He bettered that performance with a fifth-place showing in the 200 breast in 2:05.30, good for fifth in program history. Treat was also part of the 800 free relay that registered the ninth-best time in program history while finishing in fourth place.
In addition to their strong individual showings, Sokolosky, Fletcher and Treat were members of the 200 free relay squad that placed third and the 200 medley relay that claimed seventh place.
Bucknell, which finished second at last week's Patriot League Championships, had at least one point scorer in 11 different individual events. In five of those events, two Bison earned points towards the team total.
Last year Bucknell finished 12th at the ECAC Championships.
