LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team opened the home portion of its 2010-11 schedule Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium and went 2-1 against three other Patriot League foes. The Bison defeated American (224-66) and Lafayette (225-75), but lost to defending Patriot League champion Navy (154-144). Bucknell is now 4-1 on the season.
Four new program top-10 marks were set during the meet, including two by freshman Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland). Wright won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.92 seconds, placing her ninth in Bucknell's record books. She finished .06 seconds ahead of school record-holder Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), who came in second in the race. Wright took home third in the 100 free, but her time of 52.39 seconds moved her up from 10th to eighth on that list.
Two divers also recorded top-10 marks as Morgan Popple's (Bear Creek, Pa./James M. Coughlin) 224.50 score off the one-meter board was a career best and placed her eighth in program annals. She finished second in Saturday's meet, less than 10 points shy of first-place Jordyn Nicholl from Navy. Additionally, Lisa Bolle (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored a career-best 194.50 off the three-meter, good for eighth in the Bison record books. She finished fourth in Saturday's competition, two spots ahead of Popple.
Bucknell posted a total of seven first-place finishes. Five different individuals won races and both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay squads won their events. The Bison did benefit from Mids swimmers competing exhibition in a few events throughout the meet.
Winners for Bucknell were Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) in the 1,000 free, Kelly Purcell (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) in the 200 free, Wright in the 50 free, Goebel in the 100 free and Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) in the 200 IM. Pontecorvo (500 free), Porcellio (200 breast) and Goebel (50 free) also registered runner-up finishes.
Four of Bucknell's individual wins were by freshmen or sophomores. Goebel, a senior co-captain, was the only upperclassman to post a victory.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 13, when it hosts Colgate at 1 p.m. at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison edged out the Raiders for second place at last year's Patriot League Championship meet.
