LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team finished ahead of Colgate at last year's Patriot League Championships, but on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium it was the Raiders that came out on top as the Bison lost by a 156-87 score to visiting Colgate. Highlighting the meet for the Bison were school top-10 marks from freshman Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) and junior diver Morgan Popple (Bear Creek, Pa./James M. Coughlin).
Pontecorvo's top-10 time came in the 1,000-yard freestyle in which she placed second in 10 minutes, 25.39 seconds. That shaved nearly two seconds off her previous best and moved her from sixth in program history to fourth. Pontecorvo also placed a team-best third in the 500 free (5:08.64).
Popple's top-10 mark came off the three-meter diving board, where she recorded a score of 224.63 to finish third. That beat her previous best by more than 34 points and it moved her from seventh to fifth on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event. Popple also finished second off the one-meter board (207.23).
Senior co-captain Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) was the Bison's only individual winner, claiming the 50 free and 100 free. He time of 23.81 in the 50 free was a season best.
In addition to Goebel's wins, the 200 free relay foursome of Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), Kaitlyn Utkewicz (Montville, N.J./Montville), Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) and Goebel posted a victory in a season-best time of 1:37.37.
Bucknell, which is now 4-2 overall and 2-2 against Patriot League competition, will be in action next weekend at the Rutgers Invitational (Nov. 19-21).
