LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's basketball's Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) continued to set career marks in her second week with the Orange and Blue and was rewarded with her second Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week on Monday. Romine joins Desire Almind as the only Bison to earn the league's top rookie honor in each of the season's first two voting periods.
Romine joins a select group of Patriot League freshmen who began their careers with multiple Rookie of the Week honors. The guard is the sixth in league history to achieve the feat and the first since Navy's Cassie Consedine opened with two in a row in 2007-08. As a freshman in 2000-01, Bucknell's Almind was named the Rookie of the Week three times to begin her career. She went on to earn the honor six times by the end of the season.
Leading to her second consecutive citation, Romine scored a personal-best 21 points in 40 minutes of play against Buffalo on Sunday afternoon. The freshman's performance put her at the top of Bucknell's scoring column for the third straight game, making her the only Bison freshman to lead the team in scoring in each of the first three contests of a season. Romine reached the total on 8 of 17 shooting from the field, including a clip of 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc.
Earlier in the week, Romine led the Bison with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting at Fordham. She also had five rebounds, bringing her weekly totals to 30 points (15.0/game), nine boards (4.5/game), 2 assists (1.0/game) and 1 steal.
After three games, Romine leads the Bison in scoring (15.7/game), 3-point shooting (.600; 3-5) and minutes played (35.0/game). Her seven assists ranks second on the squad, while her 4.0 rebounds per game is third.
Romine was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week last Monday as well after leading all players with 17 points and tying a team high mark in assists with five in her collegiate debut against Rider. Against the Broncs, Romine was 4 of 14 from the field and 9 of 13 from the free throw line. The point total was the highest by a Bison freshman in a season opener since Lindsey Hollobaugh tallied 20 against West Virginia to kick off the 2003-04 campaign.
Bucknell's record stands at 1-2 so far this season. The Bison will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 24 when they take on Youngstown State on the road at 5:15 p.m.
