LEWISBURG, Pa. - It took just one game for Bucknell women's basketball's Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) to make her mark. The freshman was named the Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week on Monday, just days after leading the Bison in scoring and assists. Romine's performance also propelled Bucknell to a 53-48 win in their season opener against Rider last Friday.
Romine led all players with 17 points and tied the team high mark in assists with five in collegiate debut against the Broncs. The guard shot 4-for-14 from the field and 9-for-13 from the free throw line. Romine's scoring total was the highest by a Bison freshman in a season opener since Lindsey Hollobaugh tallied 20 against West Virginia to kick off the 2003-04 campaign.
Romine's presence was felt defensively as well, as she finished the night with a block and a steal. She also had three rebounds in 38 minutes of play.
The Patriot League award is the first of Romine's career and the first by a Bison since Lindsay Horbatuck was named the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 15, 2010.
Bucknell, which is 1-0 in 2010-11, will continue play on Wednesday, Nov. 17 when it travels to Bronx, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. matchup with Fordham.
