EASTON, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey could not overcome a two-goal deficit at halftime and eventually suffered a 4-2 loss to Lafayette at Rappolt Field on Saturday afternoon. A pair of goals from Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Katie Durkin (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in the final frame could not undo the early damage as the Bison dropped their second consecutive decision to the Leopards for the first time since 2002.
Bucknell (5-7, 1-1) was hoping for a bit of payback after Lafayette (5-6, 2-0) knocked the squad out of the Patriot League Tournament last season. That was not to be, however, as the Leopard took an early lead. Jaclyn White and Deanna DiCroce gave their team a 2-0 advantage going into halftime that the Bison were never fully able to recover from.
Siegrist did her best to help get the Bucknell offense started as play resumed. The senior nabbed her fifth goal of the season on a penalty corner with the assist going to Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) just 2:06 into the half.
Raczek now has 33 career assists. That puts her one behind the school record currently held by former teammate Amanda Faust.
Durkin netted her first goal of the year eight minutes later, but that set the score at just 3-2 as the Leopards' Maria Machalick had scored on a corner moments before.
DiCroce capped off the game's scoring with a fastbreak goal with 13:03 remaining. The forward finished with two goals on the day.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) took the loss in goal for the Bison after allowing all four goals. The junior (5-6) also made four saves. Kelsey Andersen (5-6) earned the win with five saves and two goals allowed.
Bucknell will try to get back on the winning path tomorrow when it hosts Columbia at 1 p.m. at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. The game, which will be shown live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com, has been designated the Bison's Play for a Cure event in support of breast cancer awareness. The team will be accepting donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in exchange for pink ribbons, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game as the Bison support the fight against breast cancer.
