LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second consecutive game Bucknell field hockey was forced to play catch-up, and again the Bison were unable to make up the difference as they fell 3-2 to Columbia at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Bucknell's offense was limited to just a pair of second-half goals, handing the team its second loss in as many games and brining its overall record to 5-8.
Much like their contest against Lafayette yesterday, the Bison found themselves trailing at halftime. Columbia's Lauren Bryne claimed an unassisted goal in heavy traffic in front of the net with 9:36 remaining in the first frame. Although not ideal for Bucknell, that 1-0 hole was preferable to what it could have been after the Lions (7-4) drew a penalty shot less than 30 seconds earlier. Julia Garrison put the attempt off the left post to keep the game close.
Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) and Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) teamed up to put Bucknell back in the game nearly mid-way through the second half. Smithfound her older teammate downfield, giving Bruvik a one-on-one opportunity. Bruvik's shot found its way past the Lions' Christie O'Hara and tied the game at one goal apiece.
It looked as if the Bison offense was beginning to find its stride, but Columbia had other ideas. The Lions tallied the next two goals, first from Gabby Kozlowski and then from Caitlin Mullins, following penalty corners. With 7:20 remaining in the game, Bucknell found itself behind 3-2.
On a day when penalty corners were hard to come by for the Bison, the home team finally converted on their second and final opportunity as time expired. Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) tipped in a pass from Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) by the left post on the last play of the day.
Bucknell, which has consistently ranked among the Patriot League leaders in penalty corners drawn in the last few seasons, managed just two on Sunday and both came as the clock zeroed out. On the Bison's first opportunity, Siegrist earned a shot off the corner to close the first half, but put the ball high. Columbia finished the game with five penalty corners.
Bruvik and Kauffman both have six goals on the season, which leads the team. Bruvik's goal also gave her a squad-best 16 points on the season, while Kauffman is second with 14.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) took the loss in goal despite making twice as many saves as her Columbia counterpart. Zargarpour (5-7) stopped four shots on the afternoon and allowed three goals. O'Hara (7-4) earned the win with two saves and two goals allowed.
Bucknell will try to turn its fortunes around on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it hosts Lehigh at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com.
