BALTIMORE, Md. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team opened up its 2010-11 season Friday evening with a non-scored meet at UMBC. The Bison posted seven first-place finishes, led by a trio of victories from Jonathan Podniesinski. Podniesinski won the 200-, 500- and 1,000-freestyle events.
Freshman Mike Nicholson posted a pair of wins in the 200 and 400 IM, Nathaniel Frye won the 200 breast and Christian Treat claimed the 100 IM, rounding out the list of Bison victories.
Podniesinski tallied three top-five victories at last year's season-opening meet against the Retrievers, and he bettered that on Friday with his wins. His victory in the 200 free, though, did come in the second race of that length of the day.
Nicholson broke into Bucknell's top-10 list in the 400 IM with his first-place showing of 4 minutes, 5.37 seconds. He now ranks eighth in program history.
Treat, who also finished second in the 200 IM and third in the 400 IM, won the 100 IM by over a second ahead of Nicholson.
Frye's win in the 200 breast came in 2:14.64 and led three Bison in the top five. Matthew Stevens finished fourth, while Evan Palumbo took fifth. Frye also had a runner-up showing in the 100 breast, two spots ahead of Stevens.
Sophomore diver David Magaro had a solid day, finishing second off both boards. His three-meter score of 254.42 was his highest mark.
Bucknell will be back in action in two weeks when it competes at George Mason (Oct. 23) and George Washington (Oct. 24) on back-to-back days. Both of those meets will be scored.
