FAIRFAX, Va. - Thanks to a pair of top-three finishes in the final event of the meet, the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team posted a come-from-behind 153-145 victory over George Mason Saturday afternoon. The Bison finished first and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay to overcome a one-point deficit and improve to 1-0 on the season.
Bucknell trailed 138-124 entering the 400-yard individual medley, but a sweep of the top three positions followed by first- and third-place showings in the 200 free gave the Bison the eight-point victory.
Freshman Mike Nicholson, who had wins in the 200 fly, 200 back and 400 IM, captured the 400 IM crown ahead of teammates Billy Krause and Jonathan Podniesinski as Bucknell swept the race to cut its deficit to 141-140 with one event remaining.
The Bison then needed to win the 200 free to claim the meet, and Taylor Harris, Christian Treat, Matt Hadley and Eric Sokolosky came through, defeating George Mason's second-place foursome by .73 seconds.
Overall, Bucknell posted eight first-place showings in the 16 events. In addition to Nicholson's three wins, Podniesinski (1,650 free), Sokolosky (50 free) and Treat (100 breast) won individual races.
Nicholson, who already ranks in the top 10 in Bucknell history in the 400 IM after just two collegiate events, was followed closely by Krause all meet. In all three of Nicholson's victories Krause took second.
The Bison will be back in the pool Sunday when they face George Washington at 12 p.m.
