EASTON, Pa. - B.J. Glenn's goal 2:13 into overtime lifted Lafayette to a 2-1 victory over visiting Bucknell Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium. Tommy McCabe (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) extended his points streak to four straight games with a 74th-minute goal, but the Bison fell to 2-2-2 in Patriot League play and are in a precarious position when it comes to a postseason berth.
With eight points in the standings, Bucknell (7-7-2, 2-2-2) is tied for fourth place with Navy, but the Midshipmen were not scheduled to play until late Saturday night at home against first-place Colgate. Lafayette (7-6-3, 2-3-1) pulled within one point of the Bison and Mids, and the race for the last spots in the four-team Patriot League Tournament will come down to the final weekend. Bucknell visits Lehigh next Saturday and will need at least a point and possibly three to advance.
Lafayette was looking to avenge two 2009 losses to the Bison, including one in the Patriot League semifinals, and the Leopards got on the board first on a goal by Jeff McLaughlin in the 20th minute. Justin Kamine's free kick was headed by Sam Feldbaum over to McLaughlin for his second goal of the year.
It stayed 1-0 until the 73:06 mark, when McCabe scored his third of the season off an assist from Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School). McCabe now has seven points in his last four games and has three goals and seven assists on the season. Burgdorf has points in three straight games and leads the team with 14 points on six goals and two assists.
Bucknell had a great chance to pull ahead in the 79th minute, but Andrew Pianko made a close-range save on Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce).
In just the third minute of sudden death, Feldbaum earned his second assist of the game when he headed a ball into the box for Glenn, who won it with his first goal of the year.
Bucknell had seven first-half corner kicks and led 8-1 for the match. Lafayette finished with a 12-7 shot advantage.
The Bison have a non-league road game Tuesday night at Binghamton at 7 p.m., then they travel to Lehigh next Saturday at 7 p.m.
