BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Bucknell and Binghamton combined for four goals in the first 23 minutes Tuesday night before Jake Keegan broke a 2-2 deadlock in the 57th minute, sending the host Bearcats on to a 3-2 victory in a non-league contest. Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) and Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) scored for the Bison, who rested several regulars in advance of Saturday's critical Patriot League clash with Lehigh.
The wild affair heated up just 2:22 after the opening whistle when Binghamton's Kyle Manscuk knocked in a rebound of an Austin Hughes shot to put the Bearcats on the board.
The Bison tied it in the 11th minute on Joyner's header of a Tommy McCabe (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) corner kick. It was McCabe's Patriot League-leading eighth assist of the season, and that total is tied for eighth-most in a single campaign in Bucknell history.
Less than five minutes later Binghamton went back in front on Adam Whitehead's penalty kick, but Bucknell tied it again at 22:39 on Powell's direct kick from just outside the penalty area.
Bison goalkeeper Marc Hartmann (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) made a spectacular save with four minutes left in the half to keep the game tied, but just 11:22 into the second half Keegan headed in Tommy Klim's cross to put the home side in front to stay.
Hartmann and counterpart Anthony Sokalski both finished with four saves, as the Bison finished with a slim 13-12 shot advantage.
The loss drops Bucknell to 7-8-2 on the season, while Binghamton improved to 6-6-4.
The Bison close the 2010 regular season with a must-win game against Lehigh on the road Saturday night at 7 p.m. With eight points and a 2-2-2 league record, Bucknell is one point behind Navy for the fourth and final Patriot League Tournament spot. The Bison must win and hope for a Navy loss or tie against Lafayette Saturday in Annapolis.
