LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bison women's tennis' Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) claimed her first title of the year, upsetting Elmine Botes in the Flight A singles final at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday. With her win, Lucido moves to within three singles victories of cracking the top five on Bucknell's all-time wins list.
Lucido got a bit of revenge for a straight-sets loss to Fairleigh Dickinson's Botes last week at the Eastern Championships. In their meeting for the Flight A title at Bucknell's Varsity Tennis Courts, Lucido worked her way to a 7-6 win in the first set. The Bison senior finally broke Botes' serve for good in the second set, claiming a favorable 6-3 decision.
Doubles proved to be equally successful for Lucido. She and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) won the Flight A back draw, defeating Alex Petrini and Steph Bender of Colgate and teammates Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), both by scores of 8-1.
Dwojewski and Rottkamp had their own win over Colgate opponents to reach the matchup with Casey and Lucido. The pair of seniors defeated Meredith Rock and Kelsey Shea 8-5 in the previous round.
Lucido now has a career singles record of 70-29, bringing her to within a three wins of tying Chelsea Mills for fifth all-time at Bucknell. Her combined wins total of 141 also puts her seven victories shy of tying Tanya Sichko and former teammate Tania Varela for third in program history.
Also winning their way through the consolation bracket were Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) in Flight B doubles. The Bison duo rolled past Becky Silvers and Allie Rahill of Colgate, 8-2. They then knocked out Connecticut's Marie Gargiulo and Sarah Griffin, 8-2, in the final.
Vidrascu's winning continued in the Flight B singles consolation bracket, but this time it was at Tuzhikova's expense. Vidrascu proved to be the victor 8-4. Casey was also the last player standing in the Flight C singles consolation bracket, defeating Griffin 6-2, 0-6, (10-5).
Bucknell will return to action Oct. 21-24 when it travels to Norfolk, Va., for the ITA Regionals.
