LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis went 3-0 in championship matches on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) kicked things off with a win in Flight B doubles, and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) followed suit in singles. Morque's victory improved his fall singles record to 10-0, including a pair of wins in title matches.
Morque was forced to come from behind to keep his record perfect. The sophomore dropped the opening set 6-4 to Connecticut's Ryan Carr. A 6-4 win in the second sent the match to a 10-point tiebreaker for the right to be the last man standing in Flight B. Close play continued throughout the tiebreak, but it was Morque who pulled ahead when it mattered most, winning 13-11.
With his last win, Morque is now 2-0 in singles finals this fall. He also won the Indigo Draw at the season-opening Northeast Intercollegiate after going to a super tiebreak against his opponent from Bryant as well.
Playing in their consecutive doubles final, Cohenca and Malloy were looking for their first title against Mark Hemy and Guillermo Paiz of Fairleigh Dickinson. The match began uneventfully, but both teams struggled to hold serve at midway point. Cohenca was the first to have his serve broken, giving the Knights a 4-2 lead. Bucknell broke back in the next game, but the pattern continued. After four consecutive breaks of serve, Cohenca held for five all.
A quick service game for Malloy kept things knotted up at six games apiece, but Fairleigh Dickinson stumbled again giving Bucknell a 7-6 lead at the changeover. Cohenca then served out the match for an 8-6 victory.
After making three straight finals appearances, including once in singles, Malloy claimed his first title of the year. It was also the senior's first title since winning the Flight B singles championship at the 2008 Northeast Intercollegiate.
Also claiming his first title of the year was Maxson in Flight C singles. Maxson stuck with Bucknell's trend of close matches, also needing a super tiebreak to close the deal against Paiz. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Maxson pulled through 7-6 in the second. The championship was eventually decided by a score of 10-8 in the end.
Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) also earned wins in the final singles consolation rounds. Katten downed Colgate's Sean Spellberg 6-0, 6-1, while Zimmer outlasted Fairleigh Dickinson's Dom Hemy who retired with a 5-4 lead.
After a rare week off, Bucknell will return to the courts Oct. 14-18 at the ITA Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.
