PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Gregg Cohenca won at both singles and doubles, and Mark Malloy and Kelly Morque also found themselves in the wins column at No. 8 Carnegie Mellon, but Bucknell men's tennis fell 6-3 to the Tartans in Pittsburgh on Friday night. Morque improved his singles winning streak to 12 matches dating back to the fall season.
Playing at fifth singles, Morque defeated Carnegie Mellon's Jeremy King in straight sets. The 6-2, 6-2 decision improved the sophomore's singles record to 12-0 in 2010-11. The fall season ended with Morque having claimed three titles in as many tournaments, making him the winningest Bison so far this season.
Cohenca kicked off his day with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. He and Mark Malloy took down Harsha Rao and Alex Nemerov in the process, giving Bucknell (0-1) its only doubles victory on the day.
Cohenca had a tougher time in singles, but was able to pull out the three-setter against Bobby McTaggart at the No. 2 position. After dropping the opening frame in a tiebreaker, the Bison junior came back to win the final two sets both by a score of 6-4.
Three more Bison pushed their matches to three sets against the Tartans but with less success in the end. Josh Katten fell 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Duke Miller at No. 3 singles, while Kyle Rosen dropped a 7-6, 0-6, 6-2 decision to Rao at fourth singles. Like his rookie classmate Rosen, Chris Tortora was unable to carry his second-set momentum into the final. Tortora was defeated by Jooho Yu, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Bucknell will play again on Saturday when it takes on Duquesne at 3 p.m.
