FAIRFAX, Va. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team took four of the top five positions in the 400-yard individual medley and then claimed two of the top three spots in the meet-ending 200 free relay as it turned a lead of approximately 10 points into a 165-132 victory at George Mason Saturday afternoon. The Bison improved to 1-0 on the year as their only other competition was a non-scored meet at UMBC earlier this month.
Kristen Purdy, Kristen Bucaria, Melissa Besman and Macey Keath finished first, second, third and fifth in the 400 IM and then the 200 free relay foursome of Lauren Timmerman Emily Wright, Kaitlyn Utkewicz and Molly Goebel won as Bucknell turned a close score into a final spread of more than 30 points.
The Bison won just seven of the 16 events, but depth was key as Bucknell claimed 24 top-three showings in the 12 individual swimming events.
Freshman Kelly Pontecorvo was the Bison's only individual double winner as she was victorious in the 1,650 free and 500 free. Bucknell placed 1-2-4-5 in both of those events.
Alexandra Psaris (200 fly), Goebel (50 free), Jennifer Brennan (200 back) and Purdy (400 IM) produced the other wins for the Bison.
Wright, a freshman from Wayland, Mass., produced Bucknell's only top-10 time on Saturday as her time of 53.10 seconds in the 100 free tied her for 10th on the Bison all-time list with Abby Weaver. Wright finished third in the race, one spot and .07 seconds behind Goebel.
Bucknell will have a short turnaround until its next meet as it swims at George Washington on Sunday at 12 p.m.
