PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Top-10 finishes by freshmen Kasha Scott (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) helped propel the Bucknell women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Rutgers Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday at the RU Golf Course. High winds were the story of the tournament, but a composed effort by the Bison helped them to a runner-up finish in a 20-team field.
Bucknell shot 323 in the first round, which was suspended by darkness with a few teams remaining on the course, and that was good for a seven-stroke lead over second-place Boston College. After the first round was completed early Saturday morning, the Bison came out and shot a 326 and held the clubhouse lead with a 36-hole total of 649. But a few minutes later Fairleigh Dickinson came in with a 303, the best score of the weekend by 20 strokes, and the Knights surpassed Bucknell for the tournament title.
FDU finished at 642, followed by Bucknell at 649, Siena at 655, St. John's at 656 and Lehigh at 657. Boston College ended up sixth at 658, while host Rutgers finished ninth.
Scott (82-79) and Bernard (79-82) both tied for eighth place with 161 totals. Junior Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) was the first-round leader after firing a terrific 78 in near-impossible scoring conditions, but Lee closed with an 85 and finished T-15th.
Senior Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) put together rounds of 84-80 and placed T-17th. Freshman Bridget Wilcox (Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) shot 92-85.
Bucknell continued its historically strong play at the Rutgers Invitational. The Bison also finished second there in 2001 and 2006, and those are the highest finishes in program history outside of a pair of victories in its own home tournament.
Gabriella Riber of Sacred Heart won the individual title with a 155 total (79-76). Lisa Warrilow of Fairleigh Dickinson was three back.
Bucknell will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the Wendy's Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
