LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The countdown clock to the start of the 2010-11 basketball season officially starts on Friday, which marks the first full day of preseason practice. The Bucknell women's team hits the floor at 3:15 p.m., while the Bison men will follow at 5:45 p.m. after spending part of the afternoon volunteering at the Lewisburg Food Bank.
While Friday is the first officially sanctioned practice date, both Bucknell teams have been working hard in the offseason. The NCAA permits coaches to conduct limited team, individual and conditioning workouts, and Bison head coaches Dave Paulsen and Kathy Fedorjaka already have a pretty good feel for their teams.
"Our returning guys for the most part know what is expected of them, they have worked very hard in the offseason, and there is more competitiveness within our own team," said Paulsen. The Bison men's squad has nine of its top 10 scorers back from last season, when they finished 14-17 overall and 9-5 in the Patriot League.
"Coming off a tough season last year, team chemistry is at a high," said Fedorjaka. "Work ethic, the development of some younger players and how they have come on have been bright spots. Our preseason for about the last five weeks has been an easy ride, and the [team is] doing really well at this point."
The Bison men open the season at Villanova on Friday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. in a game that will air on ESPN3, the online broadband arm of the ESPN family of networks. The home opener will be Wednesday, Nov. 17 against Binghamton.
The women's squad also opens the 2010-11 season on Nov. 12 with a home game against Rider at 5 p.m.
