After two long, rainy weeks of practice, the Bison women's lacrosse team was ready to compete this past weekend at the Naval Academy. During practice, we worked on perfecting the plays we learned, transition and sliding defense. With focus, hustle and heart, the team consistently worked hard in anticipation for four tough games to be played at our final Fall Ball tournament.
When we arrived at Navy, our hard work showed on the field. There were big improvements from our first tournament. We went 1-2-1 at the play day, beating Mt. St. Mary's, losing close games to Iona and Johns Hopkins, and tying Drexel.
During our first game, Iona played with aggressive intensity but our attack soon adjusted with goals from freshman midfielders Andrea Feldman and Katelyn Miller after a long defensive possession. After an intense first game, we were ready to face nationally ranked Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays pressured far out of the 12-meter, which forced our attackers to move the ball quickly and find the open girl. Our senior goalie, Alyssa DeLorenz, had a big game saving shots at key moments. Overall we proved that such a young team could compete with high competition as we only lost by a four-goal margin.
We then enjoyed an hour break in order to re-energize for the game against the Mount. Our break proved to be very beneficial when we came out ready to play with a fast-paced scoring offense and a strong defense. Senior Julia Braun pumped up the offense and celebrated after every goal in order to keep the energy high throughout the whole game. This same energy showed in our final game when we played with constant intensity. With many fast-break goals, our offense made the Drexel defense work hard to stop us. Senior Ashley St. John kept the defense talking in order to work together and slide for help.
Overall, it was a great weekend of college lacrosse. We showed tremendous improvement from the previous tournament and as the day went on. Every girl on the team proved to be a threat for our opponents. Our team worked together and showed what Bison lacrosse is all about. Heading into pre-season conditioning, we will only continue to improve. The team has high hopes for spring season due to the continuous hard work we put in every day.
