ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Bucknell women's basketball dropped its Patriot League opener to Navy, 70-40, at Alumni Hall on Friday night. Shooting woes and a tough Navy (8-7, 1-0) defense troubled the Bison (4-10, 0-1) from the start, handing them the largest margin of defeat of the season.
It was not the start to the Patriot League season the Bison were looking for as they quickly fell behind the Midshipmen. After getting to a 9-9 tie at the 14:50 mark, Bucknell failed to put another score on the board for more than six minutes. The Bison appeared out of sorts at both ends of the court, committing a number of turnovers and suffering a stifling Navy defensive effort on offense while allowing uncontested baskets on defense.
Navy used Bucknell's struggles to its advantage, as it went on a 14-0 run during the Bison's scoring drought. That took the score from the tie to 23-9 in favor of the Mids with many of those points coming off turnovers. At the half, Navy had gathered 11 points off turnovers and eight on the fastbreak, while Bucknell failed to score in either situation.
Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) completed the opening frame with eight points, making her the only Bison to score than once in the half. Despite the guard's production, her team entered the locker room at the half trailing 34-18.
Bucknell was able to score more regularly in the second half, getting a handful of buckets on the block. Navy outpaced the Bison, however, answering many of its opponents shots with three pointers on its own end. K.C. Gordon, Kristin Bowen and Megan Matheny combined for five straight baskets from behind the arc to put the Mids ahead 51-28 with 10:09 to play.
The Bison continued to struggle to make any headway throughout the remainder of the half, as the Midshipmen had too much fire power. When the Mids' long-distance shooting cooled off, they turned to the inside game, producing off their driving game.
Bucknell finished the evening at 31.5 percent (17-for-54) from the field and just 42.9 percent (3-for-7) from the free throw line. Navy fared significantly better, going 52.8 percent (28-for-53) from the field.
Krewson finished the night with 16 points to lead the Bison. She also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Four Midshipmen finished in double figures, led by Bowen with 17. Angela Myers added a team-best six rebounds to her 13 points.
Bucknell is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 to take on American at 7 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
