ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their regular seasons Saturday afternoon at Navy's Lejeune Hall at the Navy Invitational. The Bison competed against American and host Navy at the three-team unscored meet.
Bucknell's squads combined for eight individual first-place finishes, with the women claiming seven. Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) won the 100-yard freestyle and the 200 back, while Allison FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) won the 100 breaststroke, Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) claimed the 200 butterfly and Caroline Walsh (Watchung, N.J./Kent Place School) captured the 200 breast to round out the women's winners. Daniel Fletcher's (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) victory in the 200 freestyle marked Bucknell's lone win on the men's side.
Warren won the 100 free for the second consecutive meet (52.90) as she led six Bison among the top-10 finishers. Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) was second, while Lauren Timmerman (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), Lyndsay Shand (Park City, Utah/Park City), Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and Marisa Taddeo (Bohemia, N.Y./St. Anthony's) were fifth, eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. Warren also led a 1-2-3 Bison sweep in the 200 back, although just four swimmers were entered in the race.
Bucknell was also strong in the 100 breast, claiming four of the top nine positions in the 18-person field. Atkinson won in a career-best 1 minute, 8.37 seconds, while Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Kristen Bucaria (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Sinead O'Dwyer (Green River, Wyo./The Peddie School (N.J.)) were in the bottom half of the top 10.
A freshman, Timmerman did not post a victory, but her name showed up in the top eight of three different events (100 free, 200 free, 50 free). In addition to her second-place finish in the 100 free, she also had a runner-up showing in the 200 free and was eighth in the 50 free.
FitzPatrick swept both boards for the third time this month, and her score of 237.30 off the one-meter board was a personal-best and the fourth-best mark in program history. Her 234.45 off the three-meter board was her fifth-best of the year. FitzPatrick now has 11 total first-place finishes this year, including eight off the higher board.
Fletcher's victory in the 200 free marked the Bucknell men's squad's only individual win, but the Bison did have two second-place showings and 10 total top-five placings.
Fletcher won the 200 free in 1:43.12, leading four Bison in the top nine in the race. He was also Bucknell's top finisher in the 100 breast, taking sixth in 1:00.62.
Stuart Ainsworth (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) had a strong day as well, finishing as the runner-up in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 back.
Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek), Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse), Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville), Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Brendan Wills (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./LaSalle College HS) were the other Bison men to post multiple top-10 finishes in swimming events.
In the diving competition, freshman David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) took third (out of four) off the one-meter board and fourth (of four) off the three-meter. However, his one-meter score of 253.10 was his highest since early December, and his three-meter tally of 260.70 was his fourth-best this season.
Both Bucknell squads will now be idle until the Patriot League Championships in a little less than three weeks. This year's championships will take place at Navy, Feb. 18-20.
