BUFFALO, N.Y. - Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) had another standout performance with 25 points in Bucknell women's basketball's 64-51 loss to Buffalo at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bison (3-9) shot 10-for-21 from behind the three-point arc, including 7-for-11 from Krewson, against the Bulls (4-9).
With Krewson's strong shooting, the sophomore is averaging 27.5 points over the last two games. She also scored a career-high 30 against Lycoming in the Bison's last contest.
Bucknell got its offense started early with its long-distance shooting as Morgan Wrightson (Gaithersburg, Md./Notre Dame Academy (Va.)) opened play with a three pointer to put her team on the board first. Buffalo answered with a nine-point run, but the Bison's three-point shooting kept the game close. Bucknell tied the contest at the 11 minute mark after Wrightson drained her second shot from behind the arc and Krewson added two more from long distance.
Wrightson finished the half 3-for-3 from behind the line, helping her to 10 points in the opening stanza. Krewson was nearly as successful, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point distance for nine points.
Cosima Higham (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) was the only other Bison to score in the opening minutes. The junior got her team's paint action started with a pair of back-to-back hook shots, but the play of Buffalo's forwards made it difficult for the Bison. The Bulls' Kourtney Brown entered the locker room with 14 rebounds, while the Bison totaled just 13 as a team.
The Bison's offensive production was slow in the second half, making any kind of comeback a tough order. Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) got herself in the scoring column with an early layup, and a free throw by Joyce Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) improved the score by just three through the first six minutes. After trailing by a tally of 36-28 at the half, Bucknell found itself down 51-34.
Krewson continued her sure shooting, getting 16 points in the second half. The sophomore guard received limited help from her teammates on the offensive end, but the team's defensive effort paid off down the stretch. After Brown scored six consecutive points, the Bulls were held without a field goal for 11:05 and pointless for more than eight minutes. That gave Bucknell a bit of a look, as the Orange and Blue had trailed by a game-high 20 points at the 14:21 mark but worked their way back to within nine points with less than three minutes to go.
In the end, however, the Bison's deficit from earlier in the second was too much, as they dropped their ninth game of the season.
Joining Krewson in double-figure scoring was Higham with 11 points and Wrightson with 10. Novacek, Horbatuck and Christina Chukwuedo (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) combined for Bucknell's remaining five points. Novacek also led the team with six rebounds, and Wrightson had a team-best five assists.
Brown led the way for the Bulls with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Beth Christensen chipped in 11 points.
Bucknell will have little time to prepare for its next contest as the team takes on Cornell at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6 in Ithaca, N.Y.
